!±8± Finale - Dance Cubano, Variations for Strings on a Theme by M. Winston

For the last movement of the "Variations for Strings on a Theme by M. Winston", I knew I wanted to get more modern, more polyrhythmic, more angular and a lot more dissonant after all the very regular melodic material and mostly simple modal/tonal treatment used in all the previous movements. The dance opens with the Variations motif condensed into a five note pattern that repeats over and over with no particular meter standing out - winding along with sproadic dissonant hits until its time for the melody to break out. From there its just a fun romp - using all the Notion String techniques - sul pont., mutes, accents, pizzicato (though only the pizz. sounds really right). Frankly all the other movements took a couple of days to write a piece. This last one took 3 years. I wrote the beginning part in a day or two and then had no idea where to go. Then a year later I was in NYC with a friend and went to a music store where I just happened to buy a book on Cuban Salsa patterns. Lightbulb went off. That turned into the thematic part of the dance. Suggestive of Cuban salsa, but not really trying be a true one. But then I never quite knew how I wanted to end it. Another year went by. So I took off from work today to give it a shot and I finally figured out how to bring this 24+ minute set of string pieces to a fitting conclusion. So I say goodbye to the Variations Suite - and now on to the next thing.
